Waiwera has been renowned for its wonderful water for centuries. In the olden days, thousands of Maori used to dig holes in the sand at Waiwera to bath in and drink the water. Water they believed to be so powerful they nicknamed it 'Te Rata' (The Doctor).
In the delightful Victorian days of the late 19th century Waiwera became the first Spa in Australasia where pasty, pale, sickly folk travelled from all around the globe (or empire
as they called it before the Americans took over) to heal themselves in the legendary water. A practice that continued until the impressive colonial hotel rather inconveniently burned to the ground in 1926.
In the 80's and 90's, Waiwera re-emerged as a family thermal resort where kids learnt to 'water-bomb' their parents and almost every teenager in Auckland had their first pash.
The Waiwera Infinity Thermal Spa Resort is currently undergoing a transformation which will make it, once again, the South Pacific's premier destination for health & wellness.
